December Is India's Biggest Travel Month — And the Hardest to Book Last-Minute
Christmas week and New Year is when every Indian with school-age children travels. Which means flights to Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore, Bali, and any reasonable European destination fill up 2–3 months in advance, and prices jump 40–70% from November levels. If you're reading this in October or November 2026 and haven't booked yet: start today.
This guide ranks the best December international destinations from India by three factors: visa availability and ease, actual weather in December, and value for the cost. Not all great destinations are great in December specifically — we've filtered for those.
Tier 1: Book Now, Visa in 24 Hours
These destinations have either no visa requirement, a visa-on-arrival, or an e-Visa that clears in under 48 hours. Zero visa stress, all weather-appropriate in December.

- ✓🇲🇻 Maldives — Zero visa, zero application, stamp on arrival. December weather: calm seas, no rain. Honeymooner and anniversary crowd. Book resorts by August — December fills completely.
- ✓🇱🇰 Sri Lanka — ETA in 24 hours, ₹1,800 fee. December is the west coast dry season (Colombo, Galle, Negombo). East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is rainy in December — stay west.
- ✓🇮🇩 Bali — December has short afternoon rains but mornings are stunning. Visa on Arrival. Ubud, Canggu, Uluwatu. New Year parties at beach clubs are peak Bali — magnificent if that's what you're going for, overwhelming if it isn't.
Tier 2: Apply Now, Visa Ready in 1–2 Weeks
These destinations require a proper visa application but process it in time if you apply by mid-October 2026.
- ✓🇸🇬 Singapore — e-Visa in 3 business days usually. December is busiest tourist month (school holidays). Gardens by the Bay Christmas light display, Orchard Road decorations. Apply at least 2 weeks before.
- ✓🇲🇾 Malaysia — e-Visa in 24–48 hours. Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Towers NYE countdown is free to watch from the street (or paid ticketed events from the base). December weather: some rain but manageable.
- ✓🇯🇴 Jordan — e-Visa or VoA. December is cool and manageable for outdoor sites like Petra and Wadi Rum (cold at night in the desert — 2°C to 8°C). Stunning, uncrowded, genuinely different.
- ✓🇻🇳 Vietnam — e-Visa in 3 days. December is peak season in central and southern Vietnam. Hoi An is extraordinary at Christmas — the lantern-lit Ancient Town at night in December is one of the best experiences in Southeast Asia.
Tier 3: Europe in December — Magical but Requires 3-Month Lead Time
A December Europe trip is one of the best travel experiences available from India. German Christmas markets (Nuremberg, Cologne, Berlin), Paris in December lights, Austrian ski resorts, Prague in snow. But:
• Schengen visa takes 15–21 working days processing + VFS appointment availability + pre-booking of everything • Flights in December to Europe from India: ₹55,000–95,000/person • Hotels in December are 50–70% higher than October prices in major cities
If you want a December Europe trip in 2026: start the visa application process in August 2026. This isn't an exaggeration — VFS appointment slots fill 6–8 weeks out, and then the visa takes another 3 weeks. August start = October approval = December departure with buffer. Cutting it finer than that is genuinely risky for a December trip.
Want a spectacular NYE without paying London or Paris prices? Bali beach club NYE, Phuket countdown, Dubai Burj Khalifa fireworks (free to watch from the creek or Deira), and Colombo harbour celebrations are all genuinely festive, international in atmosphere, and 30–50% of the cost of equivalent European events. Budget this realistically and book the hotel by September for any of these.
What to Book First, Second, Third
For any December 2026 trip, this is the correct sequence:
1. **Flights first** — December prices rise the most steeply. Lock the flights even before the visa. 2. **Hotel/resort second** — For Maldives and Bali specifically, the good properties sell out by October. Book refundable rates initially. 3. **Visa application third** — Once flights and hotel are confirmed, you have all the booking references you need for the visa. Don't apply without them. 4. **Activities last** — Paid experiences (Burj Khalifa, Eiffel Tower, Angkor Wat sunrise) book out in peak season. Reserve these 4–6 weeks ahead minimum.
