Indian passport holders can apply for an Egypt e-Visa online at egypt.visahq.com or the official Egypt e-Visa portal. The process: fill a short form, upload passport scan and digital photo, pay USD 25 (approximately ₹2,100) by international card, and receive your e-Visa by email within 3–5 business days. The e-Visa allows a 30-day single-entry or 30-day multiple-entry stay and is accepted at Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Luxor, and Alexandria international airports. A visa on arrival is also available at Egyptian airports, but the online e-Visa is recommended — the VOA queue at Cairo airport can be long.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only Wonder of the Ancient World still standing — and for Indian visitors with a lifelong connection to ancient civilizations, it is an intensely personal experience. The Giza Plateau (30 minutes from central Cairo) has the Great Pyramid, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Sphinx, all visible together in one frame. Camel ride photos by the Sphinx are touristy but enormously popular with Indian visitors. The Egyptian Museum in central Cairo houses King Tutankhamun's golden death mask, royal mummies, and the world's largest collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts. The new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) near Giza has now opened — a purpose-built modern museum considered the world's largest archaeological museum, including the complete Tutankhamun collection.
Luxor, 700km south of Cairo on the Nile, is arguably the most concentrated collection of ancient monuments on Earth. The East Bank: Karnak Temple (the largest ancient religious site in the world — construction spanning 2,000 years) and Luxor Temple (lit at night and spectacular after sunset). The West Bank: the Valley of the Kings (where 63 royal tombs have been discovered, including Tutankhamun's), the Valley of the Queens, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut (a female pharaoh — one of ancient history's most remarkable figures), and Medinet Habu. A hot air balloon over Luxor at sunrise (approximately USD 50–80/₹4,200–6,700) is one of the world's great balloon experiences — the temples and the Nile below in the early morning light. Luxor is 1 hour by domestic flight from Cairo or 10 hours by overnight train (the Al-Boraq luxury train is a good option).
A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan (typically 3–4 nights) is Egypt's signature premium experience and highly popular with Indian families and couples. The cruise boats travel 200km between Luxor and Aswan, stopping at ancient temples along the way — Edfu (Temple of Horus, one of the best-preserved Egyptian temples), Kom Ombo (a double temple dedicated to two gods, beautifully situated on the Nile bend), and culminating in Aswan. The Abu Simbel temples (built by Ramesses II — two massive rock-cut temples relocated piece by piece in the 1960s to save them from the rising Aswan High Dam reservoir) are a day trip from Aswan. Nile cruise prices: budget cruise from USD 200 per person (3 nights, meals included), luxury from USD 800+. Book well in advance for winter high season (October–February).
Beyond ancient Egypt, the country has world-class Red Sea beach resorts that are popular with Indian tourists. Hurghada: a large Red Sea resort town with excellent coral reef snorkelling and diving, all-inclusive beach hotels, water parks, and desert quad-biking. Direct flights from India (usually via Cairo or Dubai). Sharm El-Sheikh: a more upmarket resort at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, with some of the world's best diving (Ras Mohammed Marine Park, the SS Thistlegorm wreck). Both are good standalone beach destinations for Indian families who want Egypt history + beach in one trip — fly into Cairo, do Cairo + Luxor, then fly to Hurghada or Sharm for 3–4 nights of beach. The Red Sea has year-round warm water (22–28°C) — winter months are perfect for beach holidays.
Egypt is safe for tourists in the main visitor areas — Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and the Red Sea resorts. The Sinai Peninsula (outside the resort enclave of Sharm El-Sheikh) has isolated security incidents and is not recommended for tourist travel. Practical tips: currency exchange rates at banks and licensed exchange bureaux are significantly better than at airport counters — exchange USD or EUR, not INR. Egyptian Pound (EGP) has experienced significant depreciation — check current rates before travel. Tipping (baksheesh) is an ingrained part of Egyptian culture — USD 1 or equivalent local currency is appropriate for most small services. Photography fees: many temple sites charge an additional fee for camera use inside. Aggressive tours and souvenir sellers exist at all major sites — a firm polite refusal (la shukran = no thank you in Arabic) is respected. Book a reputable local guide for Karnak and Valley of the Kings — context transforms the experience.
Yes — Indian passport holders need an Egypt e-Visa. Apply online at the Egypt e-Visa portal, pay USD 25 (approx. ₹2,100), and receive your visa within 3–5 business days. Visa on arrival is also available at Egyptian airports but the online e-Visa avoids airport queues.
October to February is ideal — temperatures in Cairo and Luxor are 20–28°C. March–April is acceptable (25–35°C). May–September is extremely hot (40–48°C in Luxor and Aswan) and very uncomfortable for outdoor sightseeing. The Red Sea resorts are good year-round but summer beach holidays are dominated by European tourists.
7–10 days for a comprehensive Egypt trip: Cairo (3 days: Pyramids, Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili bazaar) + Luxor (2–3 days: Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Luxor Temple) + Aswan (1–2 days: Abu Simbel, Philae Temple, High Dam) + Red Sea beach (2–3 days optional). A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan replaces the individual visits more comfortably.
Yes — for the vast majority of Indian visitors, seeing the Pyramids in person is an overwhelming experience regardless of how many photos you've seen. The scale is incomprehensible until you stand next to the base stones (each 2 metres tall). The combination of the Pyramids + the Egyptian Museum + the Grand Egyptian Museum makes Cairo one of history's most extraordinary cities.
Air India and IndiGo operate direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Cairo International Airport. EgyptAir also operates India routes. For Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, most Indian travellers connect via Cairo or Dubai. Flight time Delhi–Cairo is approximately 7 hours direct.
