Indian passport holders can apply for a Jordan e-Visa online at jordan.com (the official Jordan Tourism Board visa portal) or through the Jordan MFA portal. The e-Visa allows a 30-day single-entry stay and is approved in 3 business days. Fee is approximately JOD 40 (around ₹4,700). Jordan can also be entered visa-on-arrival at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, but the online e-Visa avoids any airport queue. The Jordan Pass (a combined visa + attraction entry ticket) is highly recommended for tourists: it costs JOD 70–80 (₹8,200–9,400) and includes the visa fee plus free entry to over 40 attractions including Petra — saving significant money versus paying visa + Petra entry separately.
Petra is Jordan's most extraordinary destination — an ancient Nabataean city carved entirely into rose-red sandstone cliffs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The approach through the Siq (a 1.2km narrow canyon) to the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) facade is one of the world's most dramatic reveals in travel. The full Petra Archaeological Park covers 264 km² — most visitors spend 1 day but 2 days gives a more complete experience (the Monastery, Ad Deir, requires a significant hike and most visitors miss it). Petra at night (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) offers the Treasury lit by candles — a magical experience and worth an additional ticket. Petra By Night tickets: approximately JOD 17 (₹2,000). Petra entry: JOD 50 for 1 day (₹5,900) — or included with the Jordan Pass.
Wadi Rum is Jordan's desert wilderness — massive red and orange sandstone formations rising from the Arabian desert floor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the filming location for The Martian, Dune, and Lawrence of Arabia. The experience: a jeep tour through the desert with a Bedouin guide (2–4 hours, approximately JOD 25–40/₹3,000–4,700 per person), or an overnight stay at a desert camp (₹8,000–20,000/night including dinner, breakfast, and a night under the stars). The Milky Way is extraordinary on clear desert nights. Wadi Rum is 1 hour from Petra by taxi/bus — combining both on a 3–4 day Petra-Wadi Rum trip is the classic Jordan south itinerary.
The Dead Sea is the world's saltiest large body of water (ten times saltier than the ocean) and the lowest point on Earth at 430m below sea level. The high salt concentration makes it impossible to sink — the classic floating-in-Dead-Sea photo is a rite of passage for every Jordan visitor. The Dead Sea shore is also known for its mineral-rich black mud, applied as a skin treatment. Indian tourists find it fascinating both as a natural phenomenon and as a wellness experience. Jordan's Dead Sea resorts (Mövenpick, Kempinski, Holiday Inn) are the best base. From Amman: 1 hour by car. Important: the Dead Sea is retreating at 1 metre per year due to water diversion — it is shrinking, and visits in the next 10–20 years are more impactful than waiting.
Amman, Jordan's capital, often gets just an overnight from India–Jordan travellers, but deserves at least a full day. The Citadel (Jebel al-Qal'a) overlooks the city and contains the Temple of Hercules, a Byzantine church, and Umayyad Palace ruins — a UNESCO-quality site with no queue. The Roman Theatre (2nd century CE) seats 6,000 and is still used for events. Amman's Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman has excellent restaurants and a lively café culture. Day trip from Amman: Jerash (Roman city of Gerasa, extraordinarily well-preserved Greco-Roman ruins, 45 minutes north of Amman) and Ajloun Castle. The Jordan Valley north of Amman has important biblical sites (Baptism Site of Jesus at Bethany is a UNESCO site, accessible 1 hour from Amman).
Jordan is moderately priced — not cheap like Southeast Asia, but more affordable than Western Europe. The Jordan Pass (recommended for all Indian tourists) costs JOD 70–80 (₹8,200–9,400) and includes the visa fee (JOD 40) plus entry to Petra plus over 40 attractions — making it cost-negative vs buying visa + Petra separately. Accommodation: budget hotel in Amman from ₹3,500/night, Petra guesthouses from ₹2,500/night. Wadi Rum camp: ₹8,000–20,000/night all-inclusive. Dead Sea resort: ₹15,000–35,000/night. Food: a full Jordanian meal with mansaf (the national rice and lamb dish) at a local restaurant: ₹500–1,000. Daily budget for a mid-range Jordan trip: ₹8,000–12,000/day. A 5-night Amman + Petra + Wadi Rum trip: ₹80,000–1,20,000 per person plus international flights.
Yes — Indian passport holders need a Jordan e-Visa or visa on arrival. The Jordan Pass (JOD 70–80, approx. ₹8,200–9,400) includes the visa fee plus entry to Petra and 40+ attractions — strongly recommended over getting a separate visa.
The Jordan Pass is a combined visa + tourist attraction entry ticket. At JOD 70 (₹8,200), it includes: your tourist visa (normally JOD 40), 1-day Petra entry (normally JOD 50), and free entry to 40+ other Jordanian sites. It pays for itself immediately — you save money the moment you visit Petra. All Indian tourists visiting Petra should buy the Jordan Pass.
5–6 days is the recommended minimum for a first Jordan trip: Amman (1 day) + Jerash (half day) + Petra (2 days) + Wadi Rum (1 night) + Dead Sea (1 day). 7–8 days allows a more relaxed pace. Petra alone deserves 2 full days — most visitors do only 1 day and feel rushed.
March–May and September–November are ideal — mild temperatures (18–28°C), no summer heat. December–February is cool (10–15°C in Petra and the desert, which can get cold at night) but still pleasant. July–August is hot (35–40°C) and the Dead Sea areas are uncomfortably humid.
Yes — Jordan is one of the Middle East's most stable and safe countries for tourists. It has maintained stability through the region's turbulence and has a long history of welcoming international visitors. Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea are extremely safe, well-managed tourist sites. Standard travel precautions apply in Amman city centre.
