Spain's Schengen visa is applied through the Spanish consulate via VFS Global in India (centres in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Bengaluru). Apply at the Spanish consulate if Spain is your main or longest-stay destination. Spain typically has good processing times — 10–15 working days is standard, and some applications are processed faster. Spain has one of the higher approval rates for Schengen visas among Indian applicants, partly because the Spanish consulate is known for straightforward, document-focused evaluation without the opacity of some other European missions. The Spanish consulate requires a cover letter that clearly explains your itinerary and purpose of visit — a good cover letter can make a meaningful difference.
Spain is Europe's second-largest country with extraordinary regional diversity. Barcelona (Catalonia): Gaudí's architectural masterpieces — Sagrada Família (under construction since 1882, book tickets months in advance online), Park Güell, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera. Las Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter, and the Boqueria market. Madrid (capital): the Prado Museum (Goya, Velázquez, Rembrandt — one of the world's great art collections), Reina Sofía Museum (Picasso's Guernica), Retiro Park. Sevilla: Flamenco heartland, the Real Alcázar palace, the Barrio Santa Cruz. Granada: the Alhambra palace — the most-visited site in Spain, book tickets well in advance online. Valencia: paella birthplace, the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. A 10-day Spain itinerary: Madrid (3 days) → Granada (2 days) → Sevilla (2 days) → Barcelona (3 days).
Spain is challenging for strict vegetarians — Spanish cuisine is heavily jamón (cured ham) and seafood-based. However, vegetarian options exist if you know what to look for. Safe choices: pan con tomate (toasted bread with tomato and olive oil), gazpacho (cold tomato soup — vegetarian), patatas bravas (fried potatoes with spicy tomato sauce), tortilla española (Spanish omelette with potato and egg — very filling), escalivada (roasted vegetables). Ask for "sin carne y sin pescado" (without meat and without fish). Barcelona has the best selection of vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Spain — the city has a strong vegetarian food culture. Madrid is improving but lags behind Barcelona. International Indian restaurants exist in both cities and in the major tourist areas. Seville and Granada are more challenging for vegetarians.
Spain Schengen rejections for Indian applicants most commonly come from: itinerary that doesn't match booking dates, travel insurance that specifies only Spain rather than the entire Schengen area, bank statements showing insufficient funds for the length of stay (the Spanish consulate benchmarks approximately €50–100 per day), vague cover letter that doesn't clearly explain travel purpose and return to India motivation, and self-employed applicants without CA-certified income documents. One Spain-specific issue: the consulate looks carefully at the consistency between your stated daily budget in the cover letter and your actual bank balance — they should be compatible.
Both deserve a visit but serve different interests. Barcelona is the more globally famous of the two and tends to top Indian wishlists — Gaudí's surreal architecture, the beach, the Gothic Quarter, and a vibrant food and nightlife scene. It's also more expensive and more tourist-dense than Madrid. Madrid is Spain's capital and cultural heart — three world-class art museums within walking distance (Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen-Bornemisza), a lively local café culture, and a better sense of authentic Spanish city life. For Indian tourists on a first Spain trip: do both. For a short trip of 5–6 days: Barcelona edges it. For art and authentic Spain: Madrid. Flamenco-specific travel: fly to Sevilla, which has the most authentic flamenco scene in the country.
Spain is slightly cheaper than France or Italy for most expenses. Accommodation: budget hostel from ₹2,000/night (Barcelona has excellent hostels), 3-star hotel from ₹6,000/night, 4-star from ₹12,000/night. Food: a menú del día (3-course set lunch, very popular in Spain) at a neighbourhood restaurant: ₹800–1,200 including a drink. Tapas at a bar: ₹200–500 per item. Dinner at a mid-range restaurant: ₹1,500–3,000. Transport: AVE high-speed train Madrid–Barcelona: ₹1,500–3,500 depending on timing. Budget approximately ₹10,000–15,000/day for a comfortable Spain trip. The Alhambra in Granada and Sagrada Família in Barcelona both require advance booking — do not leave these for arrival.
Spain Schengen visa requires: valid Indian passport (min. 3 months beyond return date), two Schengen-spec photos (35×45mm, white background), confirmed return flights, hotel bookings for all nights, travel insurance (€30,000, Schengen area), last 3 months bank statements, salary slips and ITR, employment and leave letter, and a cover letter explaining your itinerary and return.
Standard processing: 10–15 working days from VFS submission. Spain tends to be one of the faster Schengen missions in India. Apply 6–8 weeks before your travel date. The Alhambra (Granada) and Sagrada Família (Barcelona) tickets should be booked at the same time as or immediately after visa approval.
Spain is mid-range in European cost terms — more affordable than France or Switzerland, comparable to Italy. Barcelona is the most expensive Spanish city. The menú del día lunch is one of Europe's best value meals — 3 courses with a drink for €10–15 (₹900–1,400) at local restaurants. Budget ₹10,000–15,000/day including accommodation.
Yes — a cover letter (also called a letter of intent or personal statement) is important for Spain Schengen applications. It should explain your reason for visiting Spain specifically, your planned itinerary, and why you will return to India after your trip (employment, family, property). The Spanish consulate reads cover letters carefully as a supporting document for intent assessment.
Yes — flamenco shows are available for tourists throughout Spain. For authentic flamenco, Sevilla (particularly the Triana neighbourhood and Sacromonte area in Granada) is the heartland. Madrid has excellent flamenco tablaos (dedicated flamenco venues) including Torres Bermejas and Corral de la Morería. In Barcelona, flamenco has a presence but is not native to Catalonia — shows are more tourist-oriented. Book in advance, especially in summer.
